Default D3 benfits?

This is not a problem I am having, just a curious question. Was reading the manual for my 2007 Civic Auto Tranny that D3 can be used for stop and go traffic. Does doing this save fuel at all? I've never changed gears in an automatic car, unless I'm going in reverse or something. But I've never thought about the possible advantages to the other gears. So I thought I would ask.

Probably not, it merely prevents the TX from shifting into 4 so you don't have the infuriating lack of power until it decides to shift back to a useful gear.
