How long do transmissions usually last?

On a stock 2003 Civic how long can I expect the transmission to last (mileage wise, not time) if I take care of the car and change the fluid and all that?

Manual transmission with 140,000 miles on it so far.

For the life of the car.
The clutch may need to be eventually changed, and there are 2 bearings that are typically changed with it. That should be the only maintenance besides transmission fluid.
If you grind gears a lot the life will obviously be shorter.

i would suggest get a ACT clutch and flywheel. I brought the kit like three years ago and there no sign that it will go out. you will love it...right now im driving a del sol with 287,xxx and using factory clutch and it still runs good. no grides, nothing. Honda will last you a very long time as long you take care of it...

Do the transmissions in automatics last as long?

addiction2bass 09-19-2008 09:09 AM

for a automatic it depends how well its been driven and mainly how often the fluid is changed....
with a manual it depends on the syncros... no one likes grinding gears! but you can at least shift a gear if it grinds to badly...
but on a automatic the tranny is driven by fluid pressure and it heats up which will hurt the fluid over time. if you dont change the fluid properly the tranny heats up more internaly and more prone to going bad. and how its driven is also a factor.... neutral dropping the tranny while reving up will be certain death in a very short time!

Naa, just a 80 mile commute each way to work.

So with an automatic, they dont last forever (like 600,000 miles) like people have said with a manual?
