Default new leak

well I just rolled to 175,000 and I noticed I'm leaving a small spot where ever I park. Looking underneath reveals that it is coming from the joint between tranny and engine. I know it's tranny fluid because it is so dark. The motor oil gets changed pretty much every month (3000 mile) and is just as clean as when it goes in. I'm guessing there is a shaft seal that is leaking...so
run thicker oil?
put in mystery leak fixer
save up and relace with a rebuilt. (doing clutch/flywheel at the same time.)
deal with it..not that much oil leaking anyhow.

replace the seal gets my vote.........and while your in the transmission replace the input shaft bearing as well. you may want to take a sniff of the oil, my transmission oil is never black.

pricing parts...found a shop to make quick work of it for me.

Exedy Stage 1 clutch and flywheel going in. I'm going to do the clutch master and bleed the system before it goes in. Guess at this point I'm keeping this buggy.

Question...
does a lightened flywheel (10.5 lb.) give you better gas mileage? I've seen all the faster accel, better torque etc...but what else can I expect?

Anyhow...It was the transmission seal. They are going to replace the input bearing(toast) and check the syncros. I'll keep you posted on the results of the lighter flywheel. Should have it back by the weekend.

Yeah, you'll see better gas mileage. Good choice of clutch btw, from what I've read.

Not in any measurable amount, sorry

Well in Cali Bay Area It is going to cost me a grip of money. Actually much much more then I wanted to spend, but hey...want it reliable right?
Clutch/flywheel = 490.00
new clutch master = 25.00
R/R tran., replace all internal bearings, R/R Master, Slave, Clutch, Parts etc.. = 1237.00

Total 1752.00[][:'(]
All work done in 2 days =
and absolutely no headaches, frozen bolts, busted fingers = priceless?

I figure it is for all purpuses a new transmission now. Everything was gone over, all the bad parts changed, new clutch etc....it better last me a few years so I can forget what this is costing me now.[:P]
Will report on the flywheel tonight when I get it back.

Wheeeeeee
First off the new stage 1 clutch has a nice FIRM resistance when you push it. The stock clutch felt spongy and soft to me. (This could be due to all sorts of reasons though)

Started it up after a fluid check and pumping all pedals a few times....Everything works and no more whine/noise from the tranny
Let out the clutch and immediatley stall...LOL The new stuff engages much closer to the floor then what I was running. I used to let out an 1" to 1 1/2" before engaging....
The 10.5lb flywheel does let the engine rev up faster..but barely noticable compared to stock. Everything works the same as stock, but somehow tighter feeling. I have no Dyno results, but the butt dyno says maybe another 3-5 HP available. Not much for the money, but it's one of those changes like going from stock to I/H/E kind of changes. It all adds up in the end.

Now that it is all warmed up I do a few 20-60 MPH pulls...(smiling now).... The clutch grabs tight and holds all the way to redline. Last week I drove 500 miles with it slipping at 3500-4000. There does seem to be a barely noticble difference in the overall speed of acceleration. I'll have to get used to the clutch engaging faster, but so far I'm happy.

Transmission...
Input bearing had 1/16th " of play in it. All that slop led to the death of the tranny seal. The counter shaft bearing was tighter, but looked like little soccer *****. That explained all the noise it was making and probably would have died sooner then later.
The only thing I wish I would have done is ordered a Limited slip diff to go in while it was all apart.

Results =
Yes buy the clutch and lightened fly if you have the money
Yes get the transmission bearings replaced

I'll report on MPG savings if any next week. At 100 miles a day I have roughly 4 1/2 months before my warranty goes, so I paln to beat this thing a little after break in. (Exedy recommends 500 miles)
