s speed manual tranny swap nonVTEC to VTEC
Hi guys, this is my first post, and I have a question for all you Honda Civic DIYers... I had a 2003 Honda Civic LX sedan with the 1.7L D17A1 engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. I recently wrecked the car, but before I wrecked it, I had the tranny rebuild with a new shaft, pilot bearing, and new clutch. I just bought a 2001 Honda Civic EX sedan with the 1.7L D17A2 engine (VTEC) and a 5 speed manual transmission. My question is can I put the rebuilt tranny from the 2003 LX nonVTEC into the 2001 EX VTEC? I know that there is a slight difference in the gear ratios in 1st and 5th gears, but other than that, will it fit in the 2001 EX, and will there be any problems to deal with or is it pretty much plug and play? Thanks guys!

Shouldn't have a problem from my understanding.

Thanks for the info. My mechanic seems to think that I might have speedometer calibration problems at the very least with the different 5th gear from the LX, and that my gas mileage might not improve or might be worse, because the VTEC came with a .757 gear and the LX has a .711 gear in 5th, and maybe the VTEC was designed to rev higher than the non-VTEC, and if we put in the lower gear, it might lug the engine a bit. He's not sure it takes the same clutch either. In fact, he says he's not a Honda guy, and that the friend that he talked to is, said that neither my tranny or my clutch from the wrecked 2003 LX will work in the 2001 EX, but I find that hard to believe...
