Shifter is loose?
I just got a nice 98 coupe with a 5 speed with an odd shifter problem. When I engage the gear, all is normal, but after the shifter is in gear, the stick has a lot of lateral movement. Moving the stick around does not cause the tranny to pop out of gear or anything, but it makes it a little tough to know where you are. Let me know if anyone knows how to fix this.
Thanks!!!! |
RE: Shifter is loose?
seems normal to me.... about how much is it moving? little jiggles or make strippers look like they are standing still jiggle...

RE: Shifter is loose?
like 4 inches jiggle. It's kinda weird, every other shifter I've used (not that many mind you) was a little different. If it's normal then it's normal, but hey... seems weird to me.

RE: Shifter is loose?
You might want to look into a set of poly shift bushings. You can get them pretty cheap and install them yourself. Read reviews here: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/fb.asp?m=119209

RE: Shifter is loose?
Has anyone actually experienced this problem before?
I am not sure about the bushings as far as being able to cure this problem. It seems really cheap and easy so I'll probably do it anyway, but it doesn't see like a loose bushing could cause this. Thanks for the links, they will help a lot. I'll probably order the parts today from summit and throw them on over the weekend. thanks for the advice... if anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them. |
RE: Shifter is loose?
my 88 hatch does that... but the whole engine and tranny shakes with it... not a good sigh.

RE: Shifter is loose?
I guess my motor and tranny are not moving, so I am going to throw bushings into it. Nobody has told me whether this will actually work but we're hoping for the best.

your problem is odd... good luck with that.

RE: Shifter is loose?
In case anyone still wants to help, I just got finished throwing the bushings in and the shifter still moves the same amount laterally while in gear... it seems that the bushing on the end of the shifter itself is mooshy. Any ideas?

RE: Shifter is loose?
Yes, I know who can probably help you.
Go to this link and either post or PM (probably get faster results) Paul, and he can ask one of his technicians for the answer. https://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_12.../tm.htm#123776 I have asked Paul a few questions, and he came up with the answers for me and even emailed me some pics from the service manual. They're one of HCF's sponsors and he is a great asset to this forum. |
