SI Manual Transmission - Main shaft bearing replacement

12 Attachment(s)
Does your makes noise like it gona seize at any moment or sound like it got no oil in there? If you have noise from the tranny and couldntt figure out if it T/O or Main Bearing, indications are follows:

Clutch pressed-in and noise went away = Main Bearing (Input shaft bearing)
In neutral or driving in gear and hear noises = Main Bearing (Input shaft bearing)
If noise is heard with clutch pressed-in = T/O Bearing

Transmission Model: PL3-9000 (SI Transmission)

- After the tranny is out and on the floor with fluid drained, flip tranny on the flat surface with 2 pieces of wood to avoid damage to the spline shaft (it sticks out a little).

- Remove bunch of those 12mm bolts attached to the transmission housing (don't have to remove drain and fill plug). After all bolts removed, tranny will likely still be attached. Bang it a little and pry it with a pry bar and it will come loose.

Attachment 37220

- Flip back to tranny on the woods and use a screwdriver and insert into crack housing but don't pry it too much, then used a 3/8 ratchet to remove the Sealing Screw and you will see the Snap Ring which held the counter shaft bearing.

Attachment 37221

- Used a snap ring tool to widen the ring if you have the tool. If not use a needle nose and spread it out and wiggle the tranny casing a bit and it will come apart. Now you can lift the casing straight up. (At this point, a good time to get to know your tranny, gears, syncros, diff, etc..)

Attachment 37222

- Next step is remove the reverse idler gear then use an allen socket and remove the Interlock bolt above the T/O on the spline side of the tranny casing.

Attachment 37223

Attachment 37224

Once off, the shift arm can be rotate a little and you can lift the mainshaft and countershaft straight up (as a whole unit), may need to wiggle a bit to get it out. Whoala

Attachment 37226

- If you don't have a bearing puller, used a socket and extension and knock it from the opposite side, it not that tight, just few slight tap will do. Careful not to tear up the seal but I would suggest to replace the seal at this time, since everything is out.

Attachment 37227

Attachment 37228

- Check other bearing for damages, replaces as needed, but usually it's only the mainshaft bearing that goes bad.

- After bearing replacement and putting all the gears back. Clean the housing and use RTV to seal up the tranny case.

You all good to go.. Did I forget some steps ?? If did, probably not important lol.

civicmanchris-

On the fifth pix, with drawing circle is where the 12mm bolt holding the shift arm so it keep the fork in place.. need to remove to enable the removal of the main & counter gears.. bearing is on the bottom left only portion of the pix is display, and this is from my 91 si.. but it all the same from 92-00 (sohc) with slight different of bearing size between dx and si. Shiftforkon 97-00 is a little different, cuz it guided by ball bearings (3 bearing), where it need to be remove from the casing (12mm). BTW, the 3rd pix with the gear by itself is the reverse idler attached with a rod.

I'm am currently rebuiding another one now, a 97 EX manual tranny.. hit me up if you need help... Droopy128
