Think I know whats wrong.. second opnion.. options?
Hi all!
I'm new here, but i have an 01 Honda Civic ex 5sp 4dr thats bone stock and 102000 miles. I take care of her, oil change every 3,000, keep the fluids checked and all and she even has a name (Vicky). By no means is this car not taken care of. I baby her, as it's the first car I've bought!
A few months after i got it (probably about late august 07) the tranny started to grind when i went into third gear. Being my first manual car (and the fact that I'm 19) I was not really expecting this, but kind of understood it. Talked to my mechanic about this issue, and he said to keep driving it until its about to totally fail, basically to get more experience and save money. Well now, its not only grinding, but making some crazy noises. Obviously, the noises are the tranny (when i push in the clutch, they all disappear!) so I'm not really worried about the engine. Now, 8 months later, it's grinding in and out of some gears (3 and 4 mainly), and first gear... its sooooo noisy. My thoughts are its time to get this thing taken care of.
My questions are:
1. Should I be worried about my engine? I can't really mess it up with a bad tranny.. can i?
2. Should I get my tranny rebuilt, or find one at the junk yard or something similar?
3. Any pointers on where to look for one if I do need one?
Thanks for reading my long post! You guys and girls all ROCK!

welcome to the forums!
Anyway, I'm not completely sure, but I don't think you can do any major damage to your engine with a bad tranny. Personally, I'm not a fan of rebuilt anything (considering my girlfriend's transmission has been rebuilt 3 times, and I'm sure it's going to go out again), so I'd say hit up the local junkyards, craigslist, or maybe even ebay. Unfortunately, you drive a 7th gen, so the transmissions are going to be less common and more expensive than 5th/6th gens.
What is your budget? If you have enough money ($3500 - $6k, depending on the motor and options), having to pull the engine to replace the tranny sounds like a good excuse to move up to a twin-cam motor to me lol
