Turbo in an automatic???
Hi, I just got a 2006 Civic coupe with an automatic and am considering getting more power out of it with a turbo. What I'm wondering is if the extra power will spit out the transmission and/or if there are shift improver kits available that can beef it up to take a lot more power?
Thanks for the answers, but I didn't want an SI because you can't get one with an automatic, they only come with stick shift and that is not an option for me. I can drive a stick better than the next guy but I'm sick of stick =) I live in a hilly city (Seattle) and I no longer find rowing with the shift lever to be entertaining. Maybe if I had a Ferrari I would reconsider.
Also, when I had the old American muscle cars the automatic would beat any comparable stick in drag racing every time. I realize Hondas may be different, and I was wondering about posting in the turbo thread, but anyway, this is actually about the automatic. Can a Honda automatic transmission handle a lot more power? If it is beefed up? Can they be beefed up?

honda trans rnt like the old th-350 or th-400s in the old muscle cars, i have looked but i havent even found a shift kit for ems, as for reliability i have a 94 teg auto with 135,xxx and it slips a lil and that car is bone stock, so at first id imagine the trans would hold up but as it aged it would probably begin to fail. somebody on this forum has a turboed auto. but i guess in my opinion an auto isnt a good platform for a hi-po car
Thanks, Jeff. It will be awhile till I get around to it if I do decide to hot rod it, maybe a turbo won't be the way. There must be a spring somewhere in the tranny that can be replaced with a stronger one in order to boost the clutch pressure, we just need to figure out which spring it is, of course that might make it pop a blood vessel =)

I know, I was just teasing. Rarely have anything constructive to say and share my opinions probably even less than that. Most setups are pretty much a personal preference significantly weighted by the amount of $$$ you have or are willing to pour into a given project. Then, factor in the anonymity of this media, and all kinds of unverifiable baloney gets hashed around. Take most posts with a grain of salt and do your own thing with no excuses owed to anyone. It's all good.

I've had BOTH in many vehicles( all American Muscle cars ) over the years. While it is way more "fun" to shift gears , power is ALWAYS there on turbocharged automatics, which I currently drive. While you're clutching and shifting , an AUTO/TURBO combo is HUMPING!!!
