5th gen ex coupe tranny>97 dy8 tranny differences
hey fellas. im deffinately not familiar w/ hondas so im asking the pro's. im going to buy my friend a 5spd tranny for a replacement for the tranny on his 97 ex w/ the DY8 motor.
my question is, does a 5th gen ex 5spd swap? or can i? i don't know if there's a dramatic difference in bolting up, or if the gearing is dramatically different either. if anyone can help, i highly appreciate it. my friend needs a trans because his 2nd gear is out, and i can probably pick up this tranny from a yard for cheap.
thanks!

You should be fine using any transmission off any civic from year 92-00. Gearing maybe differenet for every trim such as the si. The si gear is much more closer together than ex for performance and ex for economy.
thanks for the help bro. btw, is the gearing rather similar from the 5th gen EX to the 6th gen EX? he's worried about the gearing, but i told him that they're probably rather similar, except the SI.
The Y8 second gear is slightly lower than the Z6. It also has steel shift forks while the Z6 has aluminum. Y8 > Z6
Just using words like "EX" and "Si" is inaccurate, by the way. Try to specify what engine you're refering to.

well, all i know about honda's is the badge thus far, maybe some engine codes. basically im using those terms because both cars(my friends dy8 ) and the parts car (5th gen ex coupe) are both stock. so whatever came in both of those cars is what im talking about.
i do appreciate the insight on the differences in transmissions. he was afraid of them being completely different, but hey, its better than no 2nd at all!
now, are the shift forks something that would hinder a swap? can you swap the shift forks from the aluminum Z6 trans to the beefier steel ones from the Y8? do i have to worry about the drive shafts or splines matching up at all.
any help is appreciated! i know nothing about hondas. but if you do ever have an MR2 question, i can answer that!
