HCF Project Section - Turbo Install Part 1

well this past weekend walter (corruptmotors), tony (forty04) and kent came down to my house to install my turbo. well we ended up going through 3 24 packs and almost an 18 pack of beer, but we did get some work done on the car. we got the left side of the charge piping figured out, oil lines done, oil press gauge ran, turbo clocked, intercooler mounted and i can't remember what else. here is my photo album of the weekend, there are some videos i need to upload still.

Tyler I might be worried about that oil return flange, its not really bent up so the oil might have a hard time getting gravity fed back into the pan..........


Looks good and fun. Working on cars (and anything else for that matter) is much better when beer is in the mix.

The funny part is, I wasn't even drunk when that pic was taken. A little buzzed, but I was battling a headache from hell all day so I didn't drink a ton. It was more of the insanity of being tired as hell :D

We ran into a few issues here and there, and thats the only reason why we didn't finish. Well, that and some people were too busy BONGING BEERS to get anything productive done *cough*kent*cough*. But the Charge piping is basically figured out and almost done, the bumper support is cut to accomodated the big ass FMIC, injectors are wired, gauges are ran, turbo is temp mounted until tyler gets a new gasket, oil lines are taken care of, etc etc etc.. The next time we come down, we will finish no problem.

I had a ****ing blast all weekend. The hospitality was out of this world. They kept us fed (with damn good food too), I never once got thirsty, and I had a comfy place to sleep. Damn good times:)

See how the one youve got isnt angled, whereas the one on my old oil pan was kinda angled up. I just hope that yours will be able to get the oil back into the pan fast enough

the oil drain line will be fine. the drain hose needs to be cut down to produce a good drain angle. the turbo actually sits pretty high so that shouldn't be a problem. the biggest problem is going to be not maxxing out the dsm450's i think.

Yeah that drain should be good considering the turbo sits really high. There are lots of little things like that, that just need to be wrapped up. It's going to be a beast this spring

and i want to do it in early feb cause i know your jan is packed.

it probably will not see a dyno for a while but it will see the track after the tuning session.

well this past weekend came and went. i pulled my intake manifold because the dsm injectors were not sitting flush, so walter and i pulled the mani and drilled out the injector ports. we broke the intake manifold gasket on friday and i couldnt get a new one until monday. we drilled the ports and the injectors fit nice now. we installed the fuel pump which was a piece of cake. i ran the boost gauge and i took my oil sandwich off to get to the intake manifold. luckily i did this cause i found out my oil pressure gauge line was kinked so i replaced that. i figured out where i am routing my air filter and i ordered a coupler for that today. i put three coats of hi temp black paint on my i/c piping and installed the right side of it. here is what needs to be done still:

Gap spark plugs @ .0030 Wastegate vac line BOV vac line Install injectors Cut oil return line Wrap downpipe and dumptube with exhaust wrap
walter wrapped the downpipe but i didnt like it so i am going to redo it this weekend, sorry walter.

i am going to use an air filter, i ordered the coupler i need this week and should be here by friday. i will be using an aem dryflow filter, no oiling necessary!

What mani are you swapping in? Draining coolant takes like 2 minutes. Removing stock IM takes about 10 minutes, install is even quicker. The most time consuming part of the process is scraping the stuck on IM gasket off...what a pain in the ass

is that a greddy or turbonetics hooked up to that downpipe? lol.

next time you change anything with coolant lines just use some pinch pliers on the ends of the hoses you might loose like three cap fulls... if you don't have those use a set of vice grips with a folded over piece of scrap aluminum or thin guage metal---- lots quicker too.

its a turbonetics turbo hooked up to it. i wish i had three way so i could have both charlton and tony on the phone.

ok i finished everything up on friday night at about 330 in the morning. wake up saturday to start my car and there is no spark. i have to go back now and check all the fuses and ground wires. here is a vid of my trying to start up the car. the battery was dead so i jumped it with my 91 hatch so thats why it might sound a little weak.

well i went home yesterday to figure out this spark problem and i go to find out my conversion harness is screwed up. i have my d series wiring harness plugging into my b16a2 ecu. doesnt make sense i know, but i ordered an obd2a conversion harness. i had some oil spilling out and i found out i needed to turn the oil sandwich around. my oil press line has kinked 3 times so i can't read that right now. im going to fix it when i do my first oil change. i would recommend people getting the electric senders and not the lines. the injectors were leaking so i unscrewed the fuel rail and then i screwed it back in and they were fine now. i think they weren't in there right. so right now i sit and wait until i can go home and try the new conversion harness.

thats what we did on jimmys car hes running a d16 wiring harness on a b16 but his is obd2 to obd1

well it turns out im only running on 3 cylindars. i checked the spark plugs to see if they were getting gas and the #2 cylindar is not getting any so i am going to check the injectors and the wiring this coming up weekend. i hope to get it fixed and into paint by monday.

if u want i will be there this weekend again for the recored the only riced car was the tiburon in the back it has lots of stickers

Tyler, that sucks man, Welcome to boost! :D I know this situation all too well. You'll get it figured out soon. Just go through and make sure none of the wires popped loose when you were moving them around the bay. I soldered the **** out of all of them, the wiring should be fine.

yes welcome to boost. you get one thing fixed then something else gives you a problem. until you get all the little kinks worked out. Im still working them out

well i threw tony's injector in yesterday and it sounds 100 times better. its now running on 4 cylindars and i got my oil press gauge working now as well. i was reading 44 psi when i was at idle, then about 60 mph its at 86-90 psi. are these numbers good? the car will be going into paint next week then a tune to follow after it gets out.

Nice. Have you been able to hit the gas on it yet? Also, did you ever get an EGT gauge?

not yet i havent been able to get on it yet since i dont have a tune yet. i did not get the egt gauge yet, im going to need one since my turbo is so hot.

I would do some research on the oil pressure just to makes sure that is normal.

Glad the injector helped man, go punch that douche that sold you the bum one in the face

alright car is going into paint on may 7th. after that i will be replacing the throttle body and the tranny mount, then i will be going up to the tuners for a fun time.

What colour is it going to be painted?

i havent updated this thread in a while, so i guess i should. well i was having a little troubles with the car. i had it all good to go and then i went up to the tuners. i needed to get a new throttle body, plugs and a new mount. installed all of that and then i was ready to go. i was still getting a check engine light but no big deal. picked the car up from the painters, drove it home then back to wal mart. wouldnt start after that and i changed the plugs. didnt work and i couldnt go over 20 mph and it wouldnt idle, it would just died. i decided to get a new chip from my tuner and bam no more check engine light and i set the idle at 800 which was a plus since i couldnt get the idle under 1300 before. now i just sit and wait until my tuner calls me so we can find a time so i can get tuned. almost there HCF

You are so close man. It's all gonna be worth it once you are boosting through gears!

Now you know how I felt with all the basemap and tuning problems. You'll get everything figured out soon enough and trust me its all very worth it in the end!

so i went to the tuner's last thursday and i got tuned for up to 8 psi. i found out that im putting way too much oil into the turbo so i am waiting on my oil restrictor to get in the mail. i also need a new clutch for 10 psi. the reason why we couldnt tune up to 10 psi was because of my clutch, it kept on slipping and it was just horrible to tune it at that high psi. more updates to come.

how many PSI are you gonna be runnin when all is said and done?

jimmy got hids car done last nigh and i had to drive it haha he has no liscence still but his brand new turbo was locked up but it will be fixed tuseday nigh scotty got some stock si wheels and yea that day at wallmarts sucked haha ur wife was pissed sorry dont know how to spell here name but call me when u get back in town i need to go for a ride and u need to see the new project. long story

Yeah I told you your clutch wasnt gonna be able to hold all that power. Mine was ok at 6 psi after the first tune but 10 psi is another story. Lots of slippage.

Even when he was only hitting 5-6psi with me in the car, it rips pretty damn good. I can't wait to see what it does on 10psi with a centerforce clutch
