I'm new to this...someone tell me the pros and cons and what I could possibly do to the engine.
General Civic Talk - Is a "D16Y8 SOHC VTEC" engine good?View Full Version : Is a "D16Y8 SOHC VTEC" engine good? speed_o 09-04-2007, 04:27 PM I'm new to this...someone tell me the pros and cons and what I could possibly do to the engine. speed_o 09-04-2007, 04:54 PM bump. And instead of posting a new topic, I'm just going to ask something else here. Is there any way that I can turn my car into a manual? Like if I were to buy a different engine and slap it in, could it possibly work? crayzieman 09-04-2007, 04:58 PM The D16Y8's are pretty nice (and as i understand it) one of the favorites of the D-series to build and boost. Mainly for the price, they come in the 96-00 EX models and you can get them pretty cheap. I don't really know specifics, i'll leave that for one of the more informed persons of this site to fill you in on, but from what I've seen and heard the Y8's take pretty well to building and boosting. Also you can buy a manual tranny for the Y8 or a new engine with a mnaual tranny and change an automatic over, yes. speed_o 09-04-2007, 05:30 PM Alright. What would the cost estimate be of swapping my transmission? windcalmer 09-04-2007, 06:24 PM I have a Y8 in my 98 EX, and its great engine. I have beat the sh*t out of it over the last 6 months and it has not so much as let out a peep. I live up in the moutains and it has plenty to pull the car up hills, and is O.K. on gas. There is something wrong with my MPG but when it is running perfect I was getting about 32 MPG city. So yeah it a great engine. speed_o 09-04-2007, 06:34 PM I want a stick. =[ Haha so this engine is something that I can work with then? windcalmer 09-04-2007, 06:40 PM Yup, just make sure its in good shape before you start. Compression check, etc... is always a good idea. Check the Turbo section, Forty did a great write-up there on what all you need to Turbo a car. Its worth a read. Good luck. Oh and for the stick, just get a manual tranny and then its nothing to change it over from what I have heard. GReddy_Civic 09-04-2007, 06:43 PM just wondering, what do you have now, maybe i missed it but what do you have now? speed_o 09-04-2007, 07:05 PM Engine or car? The engine is in the title of this thread. And my car looks like this: http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/3299/playingaround020ce6.jpg and this: http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6890/playingaround003mk8.jpg I'm happy with it, I just know there's a lot that needs/can be done to it. Even taking things off of it would give me an idea. But this is about the engine. Suggestions for it? Basil 09-04-2007, 08:50 PM well if you were going to take something off, take the bumper and replace it with a stock one IMO, but if you are happy with it, keep it! As far as the engine goes, the typical are I/H/E or boost it... cyberx32 09-04-2007, 09:26 PM Nice car, i think with the transmission and the pedals and everything, it would come out to around $3000 (i might be wrong) windcalmer 09-04-2007, 09:53 PM ORIGINAL: cyberx32 Nice car, i think with the transmission and the pedals and everything, it would come out to around $3000 (i might be wrong) Really? Damn. I would have thought more like $800. speed_o 09-05-2007, 02:53 AM Well where would I start to get something like that done? Basil 09-05-2007, 07:42 AM A friend of mine did it and he did not break 1000$ he got the tranny from a friend for about 100$ and had it installed somewhere (dont know) for about 800$ from what I remember... it is almost easier just to buy a car with a manual IMO... Fiasco 09-05-2007, 09:23 AM yea good point. I never understood going thru all that trouble to make a manual out of a auto car. Ej1Rider 09-05-2007, 09:48 AM ORIGINAL: windcalmer ORIGINAL: cyberx32 Nice car, i think with the transmission and the pedals and everything, it would come out to around $3000 (i might be wrong) Really? I would have thought more like $800. well really around 800-1200 Marty 09-05-2007, 10:33 AM they are bad about spinning rod berrings speed_o 09-05-2007, 10:52 AM I think I might throw a GReddy turbo on my car when I get the loot. You guys think that's a good idea for this engine and car? windcalmer 09-05-2007, 11:06 AM ORIGINAL: Marty they are bad about spinning rod berrings Could you explain that one for me? Marty 09-05-2007, 11:16 AM The oiling on the rod berrings can get restricted by dirt and other objects in the oil, starving the berrings, running them dry, resulting in a failure. I know a number of them that this has happened to including my own and Tony's(forty04) windcalmer 09-05-2007, 11:39 AM So is there any way of testing for this without tearing the engine apart, or is there something you can do to prevent this? Marty 09-05-2007, 11:55 AM nothing really, it is a hit and miss problem though but I have allways suggested people to swap to a Z6 bottom end for performance applications speed_o 09-05-2007, 12:06 PM How old are you guys? Haha I'm just wondering when I'm going to have the knowledge enough to do stuff myself. I'm tentative to work on the engine because I don't want to f**k something up. windcalmer 09-05-2007, 12:13 PM ORIGINAL: Marty nothing really, it is a hit and miss problem though but I have allways suggested people to swap to a Z6 bottom end for performance applications So the Z6 bottom with a D16 head? And they just bolt up? Speed_o, it has nothing to do with age. I am older than Marty by about 4 or five years, he blows me out of the water with what he knows. There are guy on here that are 20 and they know more that I do at 29. LOL So just study hard and learn everything you can. I got into the car thing at about 27. So I was a late getting into this world. I had done audio, but never anything else. LOL Marty 09-05-2007, 12:20 PM You can use the z6 or y8 head both are so close to eachother that it does not matter. And to the guy that asked the age in the end it matters not, I am 25 and my dad is ase certified and I am not, while being younger and not certified my dad will vouch that I teach him things all the time but in the beginining he taught me alot of what I know. It just takes a genuine intrest in what you you are working with and truely wanting to do things the correct way. WipLash 09-05-2007, 12:37 PM ORIGINAL: cyberx32 Nice car, i think with the transmission and the pedals and everything, it would come out to around $3000 (i might be wrong) i did a swap and it only cost me bout 600 with a new clutch, but i did the swap myself speed_o 09-05-2007, 06:56 PM I would have no idea where to start a swap...Should I just go to the junkyard and look for an engine? Forty04 09-06-2007, 04:17 AM Alright, I've been down the y8 road, and here is what I've come to realize. If I was going to do it all over again, I would start by swappin in a z6, and boosting that. Pull the y8, and set it aside for when/if you blow the z6. Always good to have a backup plan just in case. The problem with the y8's (actually, all y-series for that matter) like Marty said is restrictive oil passages. There are a few things you can do to help combat this situation. First, a better (steel) oil pan with baffling to help keep the oil near the pickup during hard left hand cornering. The absolute best thing you can do, is pull out the Oil Pump, and basically do some porting to the oil flow points. There are a few write ups on homemadeturbo.com, turbod16.com, etc.. Aside from that, its kind of a gamble. Soviet ran his y8 @ 210+whp (dont remember exact number), with no oiling issues. I was at 192whp for a few months, toasted a bearing, and threw a rod threw the block. To anyone thinking about boosting a y8, don't underestimate the importance of bottom end oiling, and do what I've mentioned above to try and prevent it. The money you'll spend on those items is nothing compared to having to swap an entire motor speed_o 09-06-2007, 02:45 PM Where would I find a z6? |
