Default Is the hub cap really single use?

Concerning the rear hub bearing unit replacement (pages 18-23 to 18-25 of the 1996-2000 Civic service manual), the manual says to replace the metal hub cap that covers the spindle nut. Is it necessary to install a new hub cap or can you reuse the old one? All the YouTube videos I watched reused the hub cap. Is it a question of not having enough friction to stay on or not making a weather tight seal? Perhaps coating the edges with a little Hondabond would help?
