Overdrive is just a gear ratio that lets the input shaft (connected to engine) turn at a lower speed than the output (connected to final drive) shaft. Not all 5 speeds are overdrive transmissions, but most all of them from the 80's up are. I'm not sure what the purpose of overdrive is on newer cars, as I see all too often trannies with overdrive that also have short ratios in the final drive, which more than compensates for the high overdrive ratio, and doesn't really save any gas. Maybe it helps with a whining sound the final drive would have made it it was geared longer, I don't know. My car is overdrive and it still pulls 3 grand at 60 mph.

I think the 2 or 3 posts that actually gave you an answer pretty much covered it. Remember that the overdrive is pretty much just a cruising gear and for mileage. Not a gear you want to use if doing and kind of pulling. If you have an owners manual for your car it should give you some info on when not to use your overdrive.
