I agree with everyone elses comment. A friend of mine has a type x 12" paired with the alpine pdx amp...its all sorts of nasty. He has it in a t-blazer and its very loud.Even if you get the polk SR series subs you will be dissappointed. Do yourself a favor and opt for that type x. The only other sub I have heard that has that clean of a sound and hits that low would be a focal. Those get a little pricey though. One thing though, that subneeds good clean power, you cannot go cheap on that amp. Also, think of upgrading your electrical system. Running bigger leads off the alternator will be a start but my friend had to get a bigger alternator (a capacitor did not suffice for the power my friends amps were pulling). Just wanted to throw that out there.
i was running a type x in a 1.5 cubic foot ported box on a 500.2 rockford amp it that bastard THUMPED... they have problems over heating the voicecoils, they smell when your really turning up the ****... but other than that GO FOR IT.. i wouldnt by any other sub
my buddies running a rockford t2 in his 350z in a complete custom box and a 1000.1 mono rockford amp and i make him jealous....
go to sonicelectronics.com 1 year warrantny and they are 250 bucks...

I have owned
swe-1242
swx-1042d
swr-1042d
sps-69c
spr-69c3
spx-137r
spr-177r
I've owned from e to s to r to x
I never enjoyed the sound quality, especially for the price, I am in shock at how poor the quality sounds for the price
The only speakers I had ever liked were the type S 6x9s, they were very loud, and very clear
the type R 6x9s are too warm, don't put out much bass nor highs (although you shouldn't expect highs from a 6x9 anyway) they're just a lot of mid
the type X 5.25s are also incredibly warm, for such small speakers, they should be much better able to put out a little more clarity, it sounds like the band is playing behind a cardboard wall through these speakers, it's somewhat muffled
the type R 6.5s are the next cleanest after the type S 6x9s, but they seemed to distort far too easily, and as well don't put out enough volume
The type E subs were VERY loud, but had very little quality
The R sub was also very loud, but also not much quality
The type X sub has a decent quality, but no volume since it has probably the worst efficiency of any sub I have ever seen, you'd think that with the lowest efficiency on the planet it would par up to many other high end subs in quality, but it never compared to my FiQ which was half the price
For some reason I have never turned away from alpine, I don't know why, maybe feardom? *shrug*
but I have never been too satisfied, I liked having the Phoenix Gold's that I had before them, much cheaper and scream quality and volume
The alpine decks are the only thing I really have respect for in alpine anymore
My personal opinion is
Alpine puts too much focus on the strength of the cone to the point that the cone's weight sacrifices for it's loudness
Not sure why, but they distort at low volumes imo
Alpines seem to have a very rigid cone, yet even when played at RMS the woofer plays much more low/low-mid than mids or highs, therefore drowning out the musicals of the song
They are far too pricey for what they offer, they last long but that's about all that's worth it for their price, they don't get very loud, and seem to play muffled
This is all opinion of course
But I have yet to be far satisfied
My next setup (years down the line) will definitely not be alpine
I've even competed using alpine products
They just don't seem to cut it at all for their price

They don't have any problems overheating from my experience though
you're probably just clipping your signal, which would make the most sense since you're running a 500 watt RMS amp, which is half of what the sub can take
how are you wiring it?
