Looking at getting an alarm/remote start package soon. Was looking at the Clifford 50.5x

and was wondering if anyone here has used it and what they think of it. Seems like its pretty good and has a lot of nice features. I'll be installing it myself in my 99 civic, I've been needing a car alarm for a while since I've got a nice stereo setup and stuff. Never installed an alarm before but I've done stereo installs and lots of other electrical stuff in my car, plus I'm an EE student so it'll be a challenge but I think I can get it done. Opinions welcome.

 

thats what i am using right now. i think it's a good system, i like mines. anything from dei is good stuff. the remote looks pretty good with the carbon fiber look and black buttons.do you plan to just get the alarm system or adding on other features also, like glass breaking sensor, tilt sensor, back up battery? make sure you hide the brain, wires, and siren well where it would not be easily access by thieves.

btw, i think hookedontronics.com has one of the better prices. don't go with sonicelectronics.com, they slap on shipping and tax, but sometimes they do free shipping.

 

Clifford is made by Directed Electronics, and Directed makes some of the best alarms available. I work with their viper alarms at work and they are almost exactly the same as Clifford. The wiring layout is pretty straight forward and really easy to keep organized. As long as you got all the wire colors, you shouldn't run into any problems.

Yeah I figured it would be pretty straight forward. Yeah 12volt.com has a lot of good stuff. Yeah as far as sensors goes initially I'm just gonna use the shock sensor but maybe eventually get some other ones. I also wanna hook up a solenoid to the trunk and hood for automatic release.

 

i got the trunk release and also the window module so the windows would go up when i lock the car and roll down the window when i press the button. pretty cool. 12volt.com would definitely help with the install

 

Where did you get that, the same website? I was thinking about just getting a solenoid off ebay, hook it up through a relay to output of the alarm.

 

i got all my add ons from ebay. all of them are genuine dei accessories. there are some on ebay that are not, either some knock offs or some other brand. ebay seems to be the cheapest price i can get them.

 

So for the trunk release I heard that those trunk popping solenoids are overkill and that you can use a small powerlock solenoid, is this true? And where would be the best place to install it? I was thinking about like right past the trunk release handle, you know clamp it to that.

Also, about the remote start, I read some other posts about remote starts on manuals and a lot of people were acting like its a really bad idea. Personally, I never leave my car in gear when parked (use e-brake). What do you think?

 

remote start is not the best idea for manuals but a lot of people do them. as long as you dont leave it in gear or accidentally do it, i guess it's fine. you dont want to auto start and you car starts rolling.

i've actually heard about using power lock poppers for the trunk. but i would rather use the trunk release solenoid. i guess if the trunk isn't too heavy then that should be fine. i placed the solenoid on the on the inside of the trunk lid. tucked to the left of the trunk latch

 

Yeah I really don't think the gear thing will be an issue considering I never leave my car in gear when I park it. So the solenoid wasn't hard to mount?
