Default Help With New Subs...

I just bought two Kicker 12s, each one is rated at 800W max (400W RMS). I dont know much about car audio, so Im wondering what Kind of amp I should get to power them, and what kind of box I should put them in. Also, will crossovers make any kind of difference (I have no idea what they do). Thanks in advance.

never just buy a subwoofer or amplifier... you need to plan the whole setup. the ohm load you wire the subs at effects the amplifiers power output.
now im not sure if those are single voice coils or not. top listing says 2ohm load and below it says 2ohm dvc.
if its dvc and 2ohm then your ohm load should be set at 2ohms with a RMS output of no more than 800watts RMS total at 2ohms.
most amplifiers are not designed for 2ohm output max so you have to buy a more powerfull amplifier like a mono amplifier that pushes ruffly 1K watts RMS at 1ohm and then just wire your subs at 2ohms to the amplifier which will be wasting the subs potential.
and since your a newb to stereos go with a sealed box, and the crossover is built into the amplifier.

So then what's a good brand of amplifier to buy that will do a decent job of powering my subs? (I really am like brand new rookie at car audio, sorry. All I know is that Kicker is a good brand for subs, but iunno about amps). (Any links to an amp on ebay would be appreciated as well, thanks).

If you want a budget amp, go with a Hifonics that puts out a tad bit more RMS power than your subs can handle. This would probably work OK for a budget amp: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-HIFONICS-BXI...QQcmdZViewItem

Other amps that would probably work out good are
Rockford Fosgate - http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKFORD-FOSGATE...QQcmdZViewItem,
Memphis - http://cgi.ebay.com/MEMPHIS-CAR-AUDI...QQcmdZViewItem,
Planet Audio - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-PLANET-AUDIO...QQcmdZViewItem,
Kicker - http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-SX1250-1-...QQcmdZViewItem,
US Amps - http://cgi.ebay.com/US-AMPS-XT2000D-...QQcmdZViewItem,
Orion - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2008-ORION-H...QQcmdZViewItem, etc.

I would recommend staying away from MA Audio, Visonik, Boss, and Profile.

Hmm, i'm wondering why.
I have 2 MA Audio Subwoofers in an MA Audio box and they sound great. I have a Profile amp that powers them well and has very sturdy construction. Also, the amp has a good amount of settings on it.

The MA Audio amps tend to pop. You either get a good one, or you don't. If you ever got a bad one like I did, you would probably share my distrust for them!

As for Profile, I don't like how they rate most of their amps at MAX power versus RMS. In fact, I question Profile's RMS power. A few years back a friend of mine borrowed one of my Punch 150s to power his subs while his 1000 watt Profile amp went to the shop. He ended up blowing his subs with my Punch 150 having the cone tear away at the spider, whereas his Profile amp barely made those subwoofers flex. My Punch 150 put out 430 watts RMS bridged mono and my buddy said his subs hit like they had NEVER hit before (lol).

lol
well i guess i got a good set of them. I've been impressed with their quality for the price ever since I got them.
I bought one of the MA Audio loaded boxes with 2 10" subs
It was originally listed on partsexpress.com for $235ish, and I got them on clearance for $130
they work great
my amp was 59.99 at a pawn shop, and if it ever craps out i'll get something quality. for now it works great
mine is rated at 700W, so would that make it 350W on each channel if I have it wired with one sub per channel? or how would that work?

If i have to replace it, i'd want a 2 channel amp. if i plan on wiring one sub to each channel, and my subs are rated each at 350W RMS, how much RMS total on the amp would I need and at which ohm would it need to be?

sorry to thread jack for a sec
lol

So if the amp is rated at 800wx1 @ 2 ohms, does that mean that when I hook up 2 subs to the amp that number splits in half for each sub? And can I use a mono amp, or does it have to be 2 channel, or both?
