Help with newly purchased car speakers.

Help with newly purchased car speakers.
Just bought a 95 Civic EX with aftermarket CD player.
I believe the speakers are aftermarket too. I know NOTHING about car audio, and was looking for some advice. Right now it seems like only the front left speaker works. If I push the balance right I get nothing, if I go back I get a faint crappy sound.
The CD player's display is all messed up and is very hard to read at times.
Is there any chance this could be the head unit and not the speakers themselves? Is there anyway to diagnostic this myself so I know what is wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Althius

RE: Help with newly purchased car speakers.
If that doesn't help you I'd have the head unit (cd Player) tested at your local shop. Usually they will do this for free or a few bucks. Other wise if your cd players display is acting up you might just want to replase it. To check your speakers you could pull them out and just hook them up to a regular radio.

I did go and have the head unit (which has an aftermarket Sony CD player) tested and it was the right channel that was out. So I bought their cheapest Alpine CD player ($139 installed) and fixed the problem... sort of. I get both channels now, but the back speakers are blown and the left front is hanging on by a thread... so I'm considering putting in some Eclipses for $109 a pair.
But it works, so I might spend that money elsewhere... like tint, exhaust, or a new hood.

Yeah, and I'm really quite happy with the head unit. Slick design, should go nicely with my brush aluminum trim(when I get it). And it plays MP3s. But together a CD yesterday of all my music. 109 songs, and I still had 200 meg left on the Disc. Now I put it on shuffle, and "Take that" crappy radio stations.
