Default n00b needs help

im new here (and to imports) and im not even sure this thread belongs here, but its kinda along the same lines, so here we go.

i have a 98 honda civic EX coupe with 59k, and i just got it today. it doesnt have a keyless remote for it, and i was wondering if i can buy a stock remote off ebay and make it work on my car. i do not know if my car ever had one, and the previous owner didnt give it to the dealer, or it just wasnt given one from the factory, so any good advice would be helpful here. thanks guys!!!

you can have keyless entry installed. as far as buying one from ebay I am not sure if that will work. If you are getting just the remote I believe they have codes built into them so you cant just walk down the street unlocking peoples civics.

so I guess first step would be if your car actally has a keyless entry installed and you just dont have the remote for it. if so then I believe you can buy a remote for it and have a dealer program it?

I think the 98 had the receiver for the keyless remote built into the dash AM/FM radio. If the radio has been replaced with an aftermarket one, the keyless would no longer work. Though sometimes the installation is made with the stock radio hidden behind the dash and still hooked up to the lock system.

Id just get your self a keyless entry kit and wire it up , easy job to do you can prolly do it in less than a day if you dont know what youre doing with simple tools. and the kits arent that expensive at all.

Mk has it right.

If you have the stock radio or it's tucked behind an aftermarket radio, then just buy a Honda remote for a 96-98 Civic.

would he need to get it programed? To me it just sEems weird to be able to buy a remote and it jus works. But hey what do I know.

Also what's a good keyless entry brand? I've never bought one before and I'd like one for my civic.

one question though. do all the stock radios have the ability to do this, or only some of them?
