I have an Alpine CDA-9885 installed in each of my two cars. I know the 9886 replaced it, so I would say that you have a fairly decent head unit!

I plan on going with a decent front stage and some subs in the back. I may do some 6.5" for rear fill after I change out my door speakers to components, but truthfully, I will probably use head unit power for the rear fills because I want to barely notice them!

I am sure you already know this, but the Civic is a small car, therefore it doesn't take much to get a lot of sound output in the Civic due to its small size. If you want to annoy everyone around you, look into getting a 12" Kicker Solo-baric in the Kicker ported box. It will drop right in, and pound like you wouldn't believe for a single 12" subwoofer with 600 watts RMS. If you prefer a nice smooth sound, go with a couple of 10" or 12" JL Audio OR Pioneer Premier subs in a sealed enclosure. I was surprised the last time I heard someone's Pioneer Premier subs because the price for performance ratio was great!

Lastly, prepare to sound deaden your car! I am about to use foam on my rear deck plastic panel and Raammat on the whole car! I am going to try the cheap Peal and Seal roofing on the floor of my trunk, but I am not sure of how well that will work out so I am already planning on using Raammat for the interior, door panels, trunk lid, etc.

since, this thing is giving me a hard time... I was thinking of doing it all alpine... what do you guys think... Alpine components, amps and sub.. I'm thinking of a type-s because they say its better than the type-r and type-x would be way too much for me..

What do you think??

I have a set of Alpine Type S coaxes in the doors, and I am going to move them to the rear deck and upgrade the door speakers to components. You could get away with Type S for your high frequencies to save a few $$. Another plus for the Type S is that they are a tad bit more efficient than the Type R.

As for the sub, I would recommend the Type R over the Type S because I just prefer the output and sound quality that a properly powered Type R gives. I only heard one 12" Type S sub in a sealed enclosure and the bass seemed to play a tad bit higher than it should have plus it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked it to be. It could have been the car, 1994 Civic hatch, or the crossover points, but I did not care for it.

I just browsed through alpine's website and here i was thinking the type s is better than the type r... but it was the other way around.. the higher model is the type-r.. what do you guys think on type-r's?? too much?? type s enough??

thanks,

I like their Type R components, but if you aren't going to amplify them from the get go, go with the Type S. The Type S speakers respond better to head unit power versus the Type R which seem to need a minimum of 50 to 60 watts RMS to sound decent.

first you need to know exactly how much you want to spend. then i suggest you visit crutchfield, and maybe call customer service so u can learn a little bout voice coils, OHMS, RMS power, all this so that u can really max out the juice on ur system when provoked, and its easy and basic.
after that i would look for some equipment on ebay. YOu gonna need a amp, some subs, amp wiring kit, some stripping tools, and a sub BOX.
ALPINE SUBS ARE GREAT!

Bottom line is mate that if you ask what speakers to get, a million people will give you a million answers.

But imo, I think infinity, focal and the likes are far too pricey for someone who doesn't want to enter a spl or sq comp. Stick with entry level speakers like alpine. Infact I would say go the alpine. More bump then you are ever going to need when your just cuttin laps. Anything bigger than say about 1kw rms worth of power and you wanna make sure you got a remote with ur headunit cause u won't be able to crank it from inside the car.

Kicker subs ARE muddy, a sealed box would suit you better because of what u listen to, alpine type rs will be more than enough, just make sure your amps don't overpower your speakers too much, do a little bit of research and learn all the terms and how everything is ment to fit together, don't just get a system cause someone told you to, learn why you are getting each part and how each part works. Armed with this knowledge, you can make your own informed decisions.
