basically, new speakers all around would be the best upgrade. Alpine and infinity make nice mid-grade speakers that are way better than the stock crap honda puts in its cars.

If you don't want to upgrade the head unit to keep the factory look you're not going to be getting the best sound no matter what you do.
I didnt know alpine did it for honda. Well, not in my car at least. Anyway, Amg is right. The most effective upgrade will be the radio. You will get the 'crispier distortion' sort to speak of but you will also lose that bass.
Get an amp first. leave the stock speakers for now and see how much better they sound with an amp. gettin new speaks really isn't going to do much if you don't have the power to run them.
on another note...I have the new Si and for a factory system I thought it wasn't half bad. I took 9th at the '97 IASCA world finals 0-150 class so it by no means comes even close to that car but it's better than most factory systems.
Also the dash isn't very good for putting in an after market radio at least not in the Si....not sure if the LX has a DIN sized radio or not?

^Unless your system rules are hard as mine.
Oh, and they make dash kits for the 06 now... I saw them somewhere. I'm standing by my guns and say get a friggen head unit first. Then speakers if you want.

get high quality speakers first. then a quality amp with good RMS. then change the head unit.
btw, I got the new civic EX with the 350 watt stereo. it sounds pretty damm good. lol.

True, but he said he only wanted to spend $600 which will not get you a radio and amp plus all the cables you need. He may be very happy with the sound by just adding an amp....and if he doesn't have a DIN radio It's guna be even more to get the factory DIN dash piece. He said he wanted better sound than he has now and for $600 and an AMP is his best investment. A new radio isn't guna have much more power than the stock deck...I don't care if the front of it says 1000x4. Go the route that will cost you the least. If you by a new deck first then your in for all that money and will end up getting the amp anyway.
My best friends has owned a very reputable shop here in MN for 10+ years, He has a show car that has competed Expert at the World Finals, he is also been featured in a few Car Audio Mags, has had people fly him to their home to tune there system.....this is the route he told me to go with my new civic and this is why I'm sugesting it for you.
