Speakers for 2000 civic si
I'm using Kicker components in the front and Kicker midbass drivers (components without the tweeters installed) in the rear (you don't want the highs coming from behind you really). Pretty good sound quality, I recommend it. They're like $70 a pair for Kicker components. Then just sell your leftover pair of tweeters and crossovers.
i just go with good brand name speakers if your off the stock radio!
or some speakers with good rep!
and if you dont like highs coming from the rear thats your preference. i like some rear fill. so at most ill just fade the speakers to the front alittle.
just remember when picking speakers for the front doors you have to worry about DEPT your stock speakers have small magnets on them and are kinda shallow.
but you can cut up the rear door panel to make deeper speakers fit to gain about ruffly 1-2inches. thats what i had to do on my old 99civic to fit my nice component speakers.
IF YOU DONT MIND DOING SOME SURGERY

just remember measure twice, cut small and work little by little. if you cut to much out its ALOT harder to add it back! you want to get it to a tight fit so after your first cut if it doesnt fit use a dremel to grind alittle more out and test fit again and keep testing it until its perfect! dont expect to get it perfect on your first cut! it took me about a dozen times to get mine just right the first time! second door panel went alot faster since i knew exactly how much i could take out without going to large!
i had some REaudio RE components that i really liked.
my next set of components are going to be some Alpine Type R 6.5components in my truck. but i plan on amplifying them with a separate 4channel amplifier eventually.
or some speakers with good rep!

I have the type r's. But not the component ones. Put them in the front of my eg sedan. The are pretty nice, but with alittle volume they become distorted. Maybe its because I got no amp going to them, or because I don't have the volume features set up right. Idk. Might get some infinity ref series for the rears and get a 4channel amp to run them.

It's all in how much you want to spend....the problem with getting any good aftermarket speakers though is unless you get an external amp for them, you'll be severely underpowering them

No
underpowered... well yes but they will still sound better than the stock turd speakers.LOL the reason why they sound bad is from the radio at higher volumes. they are just not that good for bass output at higher volume. now if you have a nice aftermarket radio that has built in crossovers for high pass then that can make your interior speakers sound alot better at high volume!
but like you said a external amplifier is the best way to go.... just alot more work since you wanna run new speaker wires from the amp to the speakers.
