Default Subwoofer hookup

What is the best way to wire up a subwoofer. I read somewhere that you don't want to wire them in parallel (i'm not sure if that is only with an amp). If not how do you hook them up?

First of all you have to make sure how much power thee sub and the amp is. you dont wanna bridge the sub and overpower it

Wiring two amps in parallel is called "strapping" and is rarely done. The amps need to be identical units (same brand and model) and designed for this configuration.

Wiring two speakers in parallel to one amp is very common. The impedance of the combination is half the impedance of each speaker. For example two 4 ohm speakers in parallel will appear to be a 2 ohm speaker at the amp. Usually you get more power from an amp by setting it up with a lower impedance, but you must stay within the amp's ratings or it will burn out.

I think I understand what you guys are saying, but does anyone have a wiring diagram to make it crystal clear.

No i don't have the sub or amp yet. I wanted to be sure that i new what i was doing before i went out and bought some good ones. I actually have a sub lying around my house, and I was thinking about hooking it up as a temporary one. It's a sony xplod 1200w max 350w RMS and it has a single 4 ohm 6-layer voice coil. Would I need an amp and if I did could I just get a mono one for just the sub? How would I hook it up.

By the way I don't crank my music too loud.

Yeah for that sub you need a box and a mono amp. You can just hook it up positive to positive and negative to negative. Just make sure the amp wont be bigger than 350w rms, and make sure its 4 ohm
