A vented/Ported box is going to generally be louder. It will allow the woofer to move more freely.A sealed box tends to bea little tighterbass. There is not a better or worse scenario unless you are talking about a specific type, brand, model, etc. One manufacturer could tell you a large sealed is ideal for one woofer where as another might say a small vented/ported is ideal. This should be a huge consideration with subwoofer selection. If you do not chose the right sub/box combo you could be wasting your money because something else just might sound much better for your money invested.

Choosing the wrong box could also lead to premature damage to your speakers. For example, if a sealed box is called for and you put a subwoofer in a vented/ported you will have too much excursion with the subwoofer and could ruin it if ran excessively as such.

ya they both have their advantages and disadvantages...

sealed box. VERY FORGIVING in air space for the box... nice tight bass for a more alternative style music. and also takes up less space for the box.

pored box. tuning is important in the port length and air space for the box as well so not to forgiving, alot deeper bass and louder for more rap style music with heavy bass notes. but takes up twice as much space for the box to function to its max potential.

and it all depends on the sub woofer you chose as well. read their factory recommendations and stick with them... some subs wont work in ported boxes and vis versa. and you need to also try and stick with the recommended box space for either style you chose.

i say if space is limited or listen to mostly rock/alternative music then go sealed, but if you want the most bass for the buck and ya listen to more rap then ported all the way!

tho typically once ya go ported ya wont want to go back sealed!!!!!! [8D]
