RE: illustrater
I don't know much about illustrater but Illustrator is awesome. Here is an illustration I did a while back. Would be cooler if I "brushed" in some color and gradients. But seriously,if you are a college student or know one you can get a new copy for like $99 from the school bookstore. Other wise you will pay $599.

RE: illustrater
Raster vs Vector. Photographs are Raster and Illustrations are Vector art. Vector are mathematical equations used to represent images. Like drawing the whole image with the Pen tool in Photoshop.

By scratch I mean being able to create stuff like you are doing with the brush tool.
Also, I am not sure you are understanding what you are looking at. That is a screen shot from Illustrator which looks similar to Photoshop. I amshowing you the lines I draw fist then I addthe color. Illustrator has an "Oultine View" and a "Preview" option. The preview shows your filled color version and the outline shows you thedrawn version.

no third axis in illustrator...Main difference between the two (which Zumo stated) is Vector art and rasterized art. With Photoshop you have to enter Resolution, with illustrator it's all computer math. No resolution!! which makes it great
