I'm wondering what your method is too. Based on your first image I don't think it's the same as mine.
Well the first image was sloppy quickie job, I got the entire car, including the windows and non-red parts. The rest of the images are trimmed with marquee and lasso tools, then I make a new layer out of the red parts of the car (although you don't have to do that, I just do it so it's easier to go back if I screw up)

From there I just mess with the hue and saturation. I'm sure there are other and/or better ways of doing it, but I'm not trying to win any contests here
