ok so i used that mothers back to black...and it works pretty darn good. here are some before and after pics....

You guys can thank our Sun for that, usually the owners paint it instead of dressing the trim every time you wash or wax your car.

it doesnt need to be redressed every time its washed, it actually stays very well.

Using Back to Black kept my trim looking good for about 3-4 of the hottest months in California. It was just starting to get some of its fading back recently, so I just applied it again and it looks great (took a lot less time second time around too).

OP, The paint wouldn't chip if you took the trim off, sanded it, and painted it. As long as you do a good job.
