my knowledge is limited on painting, i bought a ppg book wiht paint chips and i found that i want ot get my car painted crystal black, i am not sure how this whole paint process goes with the clearcoat and basecoat. can someone explain to mehow ur car is painted when the paint is stripped off step by step. i found this at ppgcarpaint.com

i understand this is the basecoat and a clear coat is needed, what is a clear coat exactly and does it have a specific ppg paint code depending on the paint color, i am confused can someone please explain to me how this works [:@]

 

I am not much on painting myself, but I know there are several different types of "paint",

You can do a standard Metallic paint, that is pretty much most cars oem paint's, paint with little specs of metal in it. Not sure on what base coat you would want, but depending on your finished product being a black, I would think a base coat of blue, or a dark blue, then metalic black over that.. Not sure though.

Then you can do a Candy Apple black, which would have a coat of silver metallic under the black.

And a pearl black would be a matte base color, colored laquer, and clear laquer.

Thats just what I read here in my book, I don't paint, but I wanna take it up sometime in the future. I am planning on going with a metallic black over a midnight blue base, and 2 coats of clearcoat.

Clearcoat is basicly like a shell, if you will. It's crystal clear paint that covers the colored paint, and adds a protective barrier. Depending on what kind you use, it will also effect the final outcome, by adding a shine to the entire paint job. If you ask me, the clear coat is just as important, if not more, then the basic paint.

I would think a good paint job would be a good primer coat, a base coat, 2 coats of paint, maybe 3 depending on the color, and 2 coats of clear.
