Cleaning a Chrome Header?!?
Is there are way to get a Chrome header nice and shiny ever again?!! I've tried chrome polish, but no luck. Is there anything that works? If not, I might just have to get some header wraps.
When I had chrome wheels back in the day, I used Mothers chrome polish. I worked very well for me. Not sure about it working on headers though... You might check at your local Harley Davidson store, I'm pretty sure theyhave polish specifically made for chrome surfaces that get hot. I know they also have the S100 line of wax products that I just started using.Really goodproduct. Good luck.
Alright, so I called up the Harley Davidson Service Dept.. They told me to get some Steel Wool that is "aught" 0000 or 00000. The package of steel wool should read the "aught" on it. Also, scrub with some elbow grease. I'm going to try that in a week or two and I'll let you know if that actually works!
That sounds about right. I forgot about steel wool. I've used 0 grade steel wool on some items before, never heard of it being referred to as "aught" though. Anxious to hear how that works out... [8D]
For the AEM intake, as long as it's not corroded, you can use chrome polish.
Now for the header cleaning. I went and got some 0000 steel wool and mistakenly got aluminum polish instead of chrome polish. Either way, I gave it a got with both steel wool and alum polish. So far after one scrubbing it got much more shiney, but some discoloration still remains. I'll get some pictures up when I get the chrome polish!!

Eagle One Wadding polish is the best! I use that to shine up my exhaust and anything metal, chrome or aluminum. It even gets brake dust etching off of wheels. There is nothing this stuff can't do. It looks like cotton. Rip off a piece, rub it on said metal, then buff with a soft, clean rag. BEAUTIFUL!!
Look for it at Auto Zone or wherever. It comes in a tin and runs about $5.
