cover any exposed wires, hoses, etc and take a pressure washer to it...then use a whole lot of elbow grease. i use armor all spray to shine up the rubber hoses/plastic pieces, royal blue wax on w/e paint i can get too, and for the tight spaces i cant get the grime off of i use ear picks...lots of em...if u have a wire brush, use it on the block and to help get w/e thickgrime off.
my bay at 170k miles, iconsider this fairlydirty...

thats about as clean as i can get my valve cover unless i do some major work to it. i took it off a long while ago and used oven degreaser to clean it and thats about as clean as i could get it. i may have to take another stab at it since its been a long while...

try some engine degreaser from the car wash or use like some simple green and a hose, be sure to tape/cover
off any wires that could get damaged
