Default Alternator

So the dealership just called the result is in ....... they said the problem with my car was the alternator and that I need a new battery but the problem is that they charging me 700+ $. My question is what goes into damaging an alternator? and should I just let them do it or take it elsewhere ?

It's not uncommon for an alternator to die. I would think that the approximate cost of a new alternator ($150) and battery ($100) would be about $250 (less $ for a rebuilt alternator). This means the dealership is charging $450 for labor. Clearly you would save a considerable amount of money by installing the alternator and battery yourself.

dito... and for the alternator..... is your car stock? or ya got a ton of aftermarket lights or a preaty nice stereo system....
or how old is the battery?

its preaty typicaly that when ONE DIES..... and you dont fix it soon it will kill the other! cause if the battery is old and wont charge well than the alternator is puting out MAX JUICE to keep the motor runing and everything else....
now in reverse if the alternator goes out then the battery has to supply all the power to the car to keep it running, which eventualy always kills the other.
but like said... PERSONALY i would replace it yourself IF YOU HAVE SOME SKILLS and tools, cause i believe you have to pull the one axle out to have enough room to get the alternator out...
but if you know how to pull the axle out. thats half the job!

i recomend if you do think you can do it yourself FIRST buy yourself a HAYNES manual for your car. they have great how tos in those books!

well their pricing was 90 for battery 90 for computer diagnoistics 269 for alternator 180 in labor and 50 + in taxes. well only thing i have really is the twin halo lights and the radio is just the headunit no amps or anything.. ohh and reverse glow gauges connected to the fuse for license plate lights. and the battery was pretty new i believe it was new when i bought car in may. and a week ago honda checked it and said that it was fine

ok so it must have just been the alternator finaly died...

it happens...... but if you think the battery is preaty new then i would just have it charged up and then tested! if its preaty new thiers a good chance it will charge right up and be good.... any autozone or advance autparts stores should be able to charge it up and test it out for you. just drop it off and come back in a few hours..... its free so it wont hurt anything and if it does turn out to be bad then thiers your core already on thier bench

dealership prices are ruff!
