Lowering vtec starting point
I have a 96EX SOHC Vtec. The vtec kicks in about 5500rmps, and I want to lower to say 4000rpms. I have I/H/E. Is there a vtec controller that someone recomends, or should I go with the vafc? Do I need a different cam? My buddies teggie has a vafc and his vtec kicks in at 3500rpms.
Having vtec from 5500 to 7000 rpms is nice, but that stretch in the 4000 range is where I lose most of the race...

Okay, so you have I/H/E and vafc.
Your stock rpm for VTEC to engage was about 5500.
So...
This is soooo extreme!!!
Set it to about 5500 rpms...
...Honda knew what they were doing. Don't F with it.

I have I/H/E and when Phearable made my chip I told them to just put VTEC engagement for what they thought was good. I later asked them what they set it to, and they said 5000RPM.
5000 is the stock number for you, and 4800 is the stock number for me (our engines are very similar). I think 5000RPM's (stock/pretty damn close to stock for me) must be a good number since that's what Phearable recommended.
Leave it alone.
VTEC doesn't just make the car faster by magic. It's not like you can set VTEC to 1000RPMs and then expect it to be faster. VTEC is only effective after a certain point in the powerband, and if you engage VTEC before that point you're actually making less power there than you would be if VTEC wasn't engaged.

it was a rhetorical question (at least i'm 99% sure it was)
the reason vtec is where it is is because that's what was the best point for it
the reason vtec is where it is is because that's what was the best point for it
