You can run 89. But since its designed to run on 92 or 93, you wont get the same power/mileage.

running lower than suggested octane risks blowing up your motor. its not worth 10-15 cents a gallon, just pay the extra $1 per tank and get the reccomended grade.

Most of the time the reason behind higher octane is because of I heigher compresion, a highly advanced timing set up or both. Using higher octane prevents detonation.

Its usually smart to go with the recommended fuel but it shouldnt hurt to go with a higher octane.

ALWAYS used the minimum octane rating required by the owners manual. Using a lower octane fuel will cause detonation which WILL damage your engine.

More aggresive ignition timing, higher compression, hotter plugs, or boost will all increase the risk of detonation, so cars setup with one or more of those factors require a higher octane fuel.

My monte carlo race car runs on 115 octane but soon to be alcohol when I get a modified chassis. It has rediculous compression and highly advanced timing.
