Default OBD 2 check engine light question

I called the dealership today to have them check what code im throwing. The service manager says to go outside and click my gas cap three times tighter and see if the code turns off in three days. Mainly because when the light turned on nothing noticable happened and still hasnt happened. Has anybody experienced this before? Wish i could check that code myself.

Sounds like vapor lock, it is when the gas fumes create a pocket of suction so to speak and it kinda keeps your fuel pump from pulling enough fuel. Kinda like if you had a 2 liter mt. dew bottle and you were trying to drink out of it with a straw but it has a hole in the bottom of it hooked up to a shopvac. The dealer did not tell you what code it was throwing? Go to advanced auto or autozone and they will pull the code for free and tell you what it is/how to fix it.

Isn't vapor lock when the fuel system doesn't hold residual fuel pressure? If so i think the FPR needs to be changed.

vapor lock is almost nonexistent on modern cars, but the loose cap throwing a code is pretty common. kinda stupid, but im sure it has some kind of reason for triggering one. but that sounds like the mech is grasping at straws. go to autozone and see if you can get the guys there to use a diagnostic tool and pull the codes. but hey, try the gas cap thing, if it works, then cool, it was a free fix.

Actually the loose gas cap throwing a code isn't stupid at all. The whole point of OBDII is to reduce emissions. A check engine light will come on when there is a problem with emissions. When the gas cap is loose, fuel vapors are released into the atmosphere. This is bad for the enviroment and hence the code.

I would recommend you to take it to an autozone. they will read the code for you FOR FREE! Don't waste your time with the dealership. after you get the code read, come back here and post the number(s). make sure you have something to write it down with.
