Weight reduction doesn't cost anything for the most part and is probably the most effective free mod.

Maybe bump the timing up and run supreme. Of course that costs like $0.20 a gallon.

Clean you air filter, or just run w/o one at the track (not on the street). Actaully this one might not be a good idea with a CAI.

Clean contact points, like on your dizzy cap and rotor and all of the engine grounds.

Switch to synthetic or a lower weight motor oil on your next change.

If you own a dye grinder or Dremel, you could bore your throttle body and intake manifold (free). Or if you were really good do some mild P+P (labor intensive).

Ummm......

If he was gonna spend money he would be better off finishing the cat-back.

Gaining horse power with out spending money is practically imposible. Weight reduction would be your best bet in your case. But, if you have a job, just save, and start getting parts, every little bit helps. I mean there's an ole' saying, "horsepower costs money, how fast do you wanna go?"

a good cheap upgrade for our little 4 bangers would be going with some ngk iridium spark plugs, having a good spark will keep your performance up, also maintaining them by checking and cleaning them will refrain you from losing the new acquired power.
