I belive it only hooks to the tach. Do you have an aftermarket tach already and just adding a light?

If your installing a shift light, it'll have three wires, red, black and green.

Red - 12 volt power supply only when key is in ON position

Black - Ground

Green - (This wire depends what year civic you have) 88 - 00 civic the green wire will go to the tach signal output wire on the distributor which is the white wire with a blue stripe, theres two harness connectors on the distributor, one with two wires and one with 6 or 8 wires, it connects to the white/blue wire on the 6 - 8 wire connector. If you have a 01 or up I'm not sure where the tach wire connects because I know the 04+ have individual coil packs ontop of the plugs so I'm not sure where the tach signal output wire is on those

Hope that helps ya out

Could you install a tach light with out a tack? If so that would be kinda cool do make on with a small led and flush mount in in the gauge cluster.

Yes you can install a shift light with out a factory tach. Some cars require a tach adaptor if not equipped with a factory tach but lucky Honda's do not require that (at least the 88 - 00 Honda's dont) I'm not sure about the new 01+ motors using individual coil packs because I have not installed an aftermarket tach or shift light into one of these so I dont know where the tach wire is.

I belive tach wires on 88-00 civics are blue.

And there is usally a test connector somewhere in the engine bay with only 1 blue wire and a big black thing on it. This is the tach wire.
