Im looking to buy a 97 hatchback this weekend but it's a 4 speed automatic and I've been looking for a 5-speed manual and this is the best one I've found and I don't want to pass it up. Is it possible to swap it over and how much would it cost to do if I did it myself or if I had it done at a local shop?

 

Yes, you can swap to manual. This type of thing is covered and asked about ALOT. Research what parts are needed.

I doubt a "regular" shop would do something like this. You would have to find a performance type shop to get the work done if you do not do it yourself.
