Beating the sysem
As some of you know I did a j-spc b16 in my 00 ex. Now I came across an issue, legality. Problem one, its a j-spec. Not U.S. emissions legal. Problem 2: Its an OBD1 motor, I have an OBD2B car. Now what I have done thus far to make my baby emissions "legal"(or so the obd2 port tells it), I have changed to a 2000 SI distributor, yes you must do this, now I have found out that when I plug my original 2000 EX ECU into the harness (i had my original harness mated to the motors harness so I could do easy ecu swap stuff like what I'm doing), I only throw one code now. Its the CPS code(crank shaft position sensor). Well I have finally figured out all the parts needed for this alteration and they are readily available at your local honda dealer. You will need the following: 1. Crank shaft position sensor(duh) 2. This is the fun part Oil pump, this is where the sensor mounts to, it has little mounting location right on it. 3. Fluctuation rotor, this is what sends the pulse to the sensor for the ECU to read, it looks like a little sprocket. So all together it cost about $300 for parts, and whether or not it works is TBD. As I have just recently obtained all these parts my lazy butt has not gotten this project going yet. Once I have this code cleared though I will see if any others pop up. Look for more details as the emissions nightmare progresses!!! DAM THE MAN!!!!! Put what you want in your car!!!!! There is no reason for you to not be able to do what you want to your vehicle!!!!! Any questions you can P.M. me. I will help you as much as I can!!!
Well Here's an update for whomever is thinking about a j-spec b16a swap. I just finished the oil pump B.S.. I found a couple more odd things for the swap to work right. 1. Lower timing cover, 2. A key for the key way (the original timing belt sprocket had the key built into it) 3. the crankshaft position sensor that the SI motor calls for is different than that of the EX in my car, so I needed to mate the connector of the EX side to the sensor for the SI oil pump. Well after all is said and done, I plugged the OBD2b ECU into the OBD1 motor and presto!!!!! No more check engine lights and this boy is off to Emissions this week for the final verdict!!! So the battle for an emissions legal OBD1 Japanese motor in a USDM OBD2B vehicle draws down to the final field and we will soon see which side the victor shall be on!!!! ( There is no problem that determination cannot draw a conclusion to!!)
