Can anyone tell me why it does this?

Can anyone tell me why it does this?
I just picked up a 2004 Civic manual. Bought it with 39,000 miles and now it has 49,000. Thus, it is fairly new. I think Honda makes really sound cars and so I would not expect problems with it already. Anyway, until the engine heats up, it idles at around 1600 rmp instead of what it use to do (about 750-800). Once the engine warms up, it idles where it should. Im guessing this is a minor problem, but I don't know what is causing it. In addition, around the same time the "Main Req'd" light went on. I'm not sure if these 2 things are related. Any thoughts why it may be acting this way. Thanks.

It's actually supposed to warm up that way, fi I understood you correctly. It supposed to start somewhere around 1500-2000 and gradually go down to normal as engine warms up.So whatever behavior you had before was incorrect, and now it just corrected itself. No need to worry right now, but if it returns to incorrect behavior you need to worry.
"Maint req'd" light (if you didn't mix it with"Check engine" light) has nothing to do with this and just lets you know that time comes to do the next maintenance.

my 1995 civic sir2 does that too, starts at 1500rpm and then settles to 800rpm when warmed up. i questioned it with my trusty mechanic (former head of local honda garage - gone independent) not worry about it though cause it's just a "cold start" mode
