D series build question
Anyone know if the hp difference in the y7 to z6/y8 is due to difference in the shape/flow of the head or is it just because of the difference in the cam profile? If the gains are just coming from the cam/vtec it would seem more beneficial to just invest in a good y7 bisi or delta regrind. Ive got the y8 IM already on my y7 and I have a complete z6 head w/ dizzy/IM/etc and before I get the ecu and go through the hastle of swapping I want to make sure its worth while.
Also if the head itself flows better, has anyone ever used non-vtec parts/cam in a z6/y8 head? Im assuming for boost it would be easier to tune a non-vtec. Im considering the idea of my z6 head with a good y7 cam and a t25. It just seems less complicated in the long run. Let me know what you think.

The difference is in both, but mainly the cam and VTEC.
Probably the intake manifold plays a small part too.
I don't think from just a new cam you are going to match the Y8/Z6 in power though. VTEC isn't just a bigger cam, it's like having 2 different cams that switch themselves out at a certain RPM. It's as if you have a cam that has a grind that is best for low RPMs and a cam that has a grind that is best for high RPMs and were somehow able to change cams out without taking the engine apart or even turning the engine off.
Does that make sense to you? (might be confusing the way I worded it)

Makes perfect sense. The way I previously looked at it was the low rpm grind for economy and high rpm grind for power so I thought you were just getting jipped when vtec wasn't engaged but if each grind is just overall better for that rpm range then i'll definitely want the vtec. I started a project thread when i got my z6 head but its been sitting for months kus ive been putting all my time and extra cash into music equipment. My band is on hiatus for a while due to my guitar player breaking his hand on our roadies head, so i can put my focus back on the Honda for a while
