D series engine build help
I want to put together the best D series engine. Right now i have a D16Y8 engine in my 1997 civic ex. since this is my daily drive i cant really pull the engine to beef it up a bit. So for over the winter i want to but together the best D series engine and put it in, in the spring. I hear a z6 head is good to use with it's pistons. Looking to get as much power out of it with out a turbo/supercharger. Thanks!
D-series engines wont get much more power than you already have while naturally aspirated, the d16y8 you have is one of the best d-series, and it would be kind of a waste of money to build that.
The only reason I could see for working on your y8 would be forced induction or if you didnt have the capability to swap out an engine, but since you do, it would be cheaper and yield a lot more power to swap in a B-series engine. I've seen b18's on craigslist here for as low as $300, but I dont have the knowledge or tools for a swap.
goodluck with whatever you decide.

i would, get d16y8 block, d16a1 pistons, y8 head(have the head redone, and ported), y8 head gasket. then you can get a stage 1 cam, b16 throttle body. chip/ tune the ecu.
i personally would love once i get better to build a d16y5 motor (hx civic) cause the motor has roller rockers from factory.

I was looking into this a little bit more recently. I am hoping to try and figure a way to use the rockers from a y5 on my rocker arm assembly. Haven't looked into it too far yet, but I am just gathering ideas and information on it.

Yeah i was thinking about forced induction. The only reason to stick with the d series is cus lots of people around here have these engines but i cant find any b series around here for less than 2500.
Yeah im just going to wait for a nice b18c to show up for a good price. Or i may just turbo the one i have. The winter gives me time to plan all of this and time to make the green... money that is.
If I had the extra money laying around I would swap to b18 then boost it. If i couldnt afford to do both I would consider my money put to better use going toward boosting the D rather than swapping to a NA B series.
Heres some inspiration for ya. Your D will never have this much power but its still fun to see whats possible.
