Default d16 head swap question

Well I'm new to this forum and the whole Honda thing. I've customizing vehicles and have done so for many years. this is the first honda civic i have owned and it is a 1997 d16 i think. Anyways I was readin about the mini-me swap and the question is can I put a v-tec head on the motor that is in my car.

Any help is greatly appreciated and if anyone could tell me how to find out which motor is exactly in mine that would be great too. Thanks

What motor do you have? Its Stamped on the Side of the block by the tranny. If its a D16Z6 or D16Y8 it already has hondas VTEC system.

thanks I didn't know exactly how to tell. So what is the difference between the two the z and the y. Plus this car has exhaust and a k&n intake but the car is an automatic. It juast seems to be slower than hell would the auto make it slower?

Thanks

the Z6 was in the EX and SI models from 1992-1995
the Y8 was in the 96-00 EX

lol way to beat around the bush there pete. yeah one thing you prolly wanna consider doing before you build and tune the car is a good 5pd tranny swap. heres why. automatic drivetrain loss is near 15% on a civic. on the 5 speed its considerably less. second, automatics shift early...way early. like 2.5k-3k before peak power. get it to be able to shift at peak power and you will be much quicker

it could also be that this is the first auto I have ever owned.. I have a friend that has a b16 and a 5 speed layin in his garage and he has a h22 and a 5 speed in his garage.. Would i be better off to put in a new engine when i do the tranny?

Thanks
