RE: D16Y8 swap

A d16y7 will work, but you'll be losing performance (lower power and no vtec). If that's ok with you, then throw it in. You should be able to find either a D16y8 (96-00 civic ex) or a D16z6 (92-95 civic ex) for a few hundred pretty easily. They're both d-series (so they'll work with your transmission) and they're both vtec.

what about the ECU do i need to replace that too if i put a d16y7 non vtec

RE: D16Y8 swap

yeah, if you get a y7, you'll have to get the ecu to match.

what about if i get a 95 ex can i put the intake maniforld from a my 98 ex because i want to make it look the same as 98 ex?

z6 intake manifold might be better from a performance standpoint and your car will not pass emissions with an engine in it that is older than the car itself so be aware of that if you have emissions tests in your area. Also I want to point out that the D16Y8's from the 96-98 civics are not the same as the D16Y8's from the 99-00 civics. If you get the D16Y7 all you also need is the ecu.

ok if i put the d16y7 into my ex can i put the intake manifold form my d16y8 because they are different

RE: D16Y8 swap

You can, but there's some sensor you have to change or something like that. Also, I think you'd need to change to your y8 throttle body and intake.

RE: D16Y8 swap

alright thanks for all the info. now i wanted to ask whats a better deal a d16y7 with 140k miles for $300or a d16y7 with 82k miles for $550. is 140k miles a lot for a civic engine?

RE: D16Y8 swap

140k is nothing for a honda engine... provided it's been taken care of, of course

RE: D16Y8 swap

the p2e ECU is the one you need if you put the y7 in there. Make sure its the right tranny (manual vs. auto).

RE: D16Y8 swap

Thanks guys! I think you answered a question for me as well! 2 birds with 1 stone. Y'all = awesome. Kthx

It's obviously more popular to upgrade from the Y7 to the Y8 for the benefits of Vtec, but I did just the opposite. My Y8 was running pretty bad and I found a good deal on a super clean Y7. Idid this to hold me over until I rebuild the Y8, and also to satisfy my curiosity about the performance of non-vtec.After installed, the Y7 ran great. I used the Y8 wiring harness and left the Vtec solenoid and pressure plate switch unplugged thinking the ECU would just not attempt to engage Vtec. However, when my friend and I went for a test drive, he revved up the RPM's and the engine made a sound as if it was trying to engage Vtec. Also, my gas mileage is worse (maybe from using the Y8 intake manifold for more air?) So, I wonder if the Y8 ECU does work with the Y7, but prevents the Y7 from accelerating any futher once it reaches the Vtec engagement point. I'm going to try a mini-me once I get the Y8 head cleaned up. If you know any more about the ECU/wiring applications between the Y7 and Y8, please share! Hope I haven't butted in a said to much, but I was excited to find someone discussing this! Thanks

You probably need the ecu for the y7, if that still doesn't work then you need the wire harness too but probably not going to need that also but only one way to find out.

What is the difference between the engines? Iwas going toswap a 97 Y8 for my Y7. Do I need a 99-00 Y8?
