Default engine ques.

aight so i get most my questions from my friend... so correct me if im wrong!

now i got a 01 EX, with 101,000 miles and want an engine swap in the future...
His engine just blew because of some stupid oil problems, and he wanted a B16, but he says that they are no illegal... so i want to know all this stuff bout engines...
Are all your cars registered, and if so how?

it's basically illegal to swap in an engine older that the car. So your two options would be either a D17 or a K-series swap.

^+1 ditto, reason being that newer cars have more strict regulations and emission rules. Older cars don't have the same regs and rules so the engines don't comply with the newer regs and rules. It sucks, but it's true.

couldn't he get a b16 from a 99-00 SI though? They're both (the si and his ex) obd-II, aren't they?

how much money you got? K series swaps are expensive, but from what i hear the horsepower is well worth the time/effort/money.

your friend has a D17A2 in his 01 EX, thats127 hp @ 6300 rpm & 114 ft·lbf @ 4400 rpm. The only D's you could swap in would be an A1, A6 or A7, in which case you would be losing power on all (and VTEC on some). A K20A2 would put you at 212 bhp @ 8000rpm and 149ft·lbf @ 7000rpm with an 8400 redline. You've got the best of the 01+ D series, so you could replace the D witha nother A2 and build it up, or swap the K.

i had no clue that you couldnt swap in an engine from an older car. i learn something new everyday. but could someone explain that if you dont have to do emissions in your state, can you still do it?
