Engine Swap

Hi,
I am new to this forum and was wondering if any one can offer advice as to engine swaps. I have a 1990 civic with a 1.6 CC engine. I was wondering what other engines could be easily swapped in to improve performance etc. or should I just rebuild this one. It has over 200K on it and is starting to show its age.
Thanks

RE: Engine Swap

for that gen the ZC is the most popular choice. direct swap, vtec, and its parts are interchangeable with most d series parts

ps. its 1600cc...not 1.6cc. 1.6 liters.

I remember when Motor Trend mentioned that the new Grand Am had a 3600 litre engine. I thought WOW! 3600 LITERS! That's like the size of a tractor trailer! What does it have, 250,000 HP @ 230 RPM?

RE: Engine Swap

the ZC motor is a non-vtec obd0 dohc motor that will bolt right in, and no wiring need if your car is already mpfi. a d16z6 is a sohc vtec that will bolt in but requies a little more wiring.

RE: Engine Swap

actually there is 3 versions of the zc......sohc non vtec, dohc non vtec, sohc vtec(jdm z6). personally if you want to stay sohc id stick with your a6 block(im asuming yourr car is an si) being is still has the steel main caps as opposed to the one peice alum mains found in 92-00 bottom ends. how much money do you have to spend? there are other options such as the integra ls engine, b16, gsr, etc......

RE: Engine Swap

yeah, the zc is other versions too, but i was sticking with the most common engines. i should have mentioned that.

If you really want a project, try squeezing the 2.4L engine from the CR-V / Element into your Civic. It may have 156 BHP but that impressive 161 ft-lbs. torque is a very good thing... ;)

k24 bottom outta the tsx along with a k20a2 rsx type s/r head seems to be the way to go if your into the k route and wanna go hybrid also.

RE: Engine Swap

Sorry guys, but you're both wrong about the ZC motors: the DOHC non VTEC came in two generations, the SOHC non VTEC also came in two generations and is comparable to the D16A6, and finally there's the SOHC VTEC, which is NOT the same as a D16Z6.

And as for a K into an EF, that's a mighty expensive project.

And I3unny, I don't usually disagree with you, but DOHC > SOHC, VTEC or no VTEC.

DOHC - Dual OverHead Camshafts. It means there is one camshaft dedicated to the intake valves and one dedicated to the exhaust valves.

SOHC - Single OverHead Camshaft. This means there is one camshaft with more lobes that controls both the intake and exhaust valves.

VTEC - Variable valve Timing and lift with Electronic Control. A system that allows the intake and exhaust camshaft lobe profiles to change at a certain engine speed to allow for a much higher flow volume both into and out of the engine. A very common misconception is that this is essentially equal to some sort of turbo, but that is definitely not the case. While the changeover point is noticeable, it won't take 2 seconds off your quarter mile.

RE: Engine Swap

too add to kappa's post about vtec, it is true with dohc vtec engines although the sohc vtec config only allows for intake lobe profile to change hence the fact its harder to tell when a sohc is in vtec when compared to a dohc. heh my run on sentance [8D]

RE: Engine Swap

Very true. Forgot to mention that.
