Default Engine Swap in 98 Civic

This summer I plan on swapping a new motor into my 98 ex coupe when I get the money. Right now I've just got my d16y8. I'm looking for something quite a bit quicker. I really don't know what I should buy and I don't work 40 hours a week so it can't be a fortune. What is a good motor that will have a noticable change over the d16 and not cost me an arm and a leg? What price am I looking at for this? Assume that I am doing the swap myself and not at a shop. Thanks.

I've thought about boosting the D...just seems like a lot of work. Upgrading fuel system...tuning...getting a larger exhaust. And how much boost would I be able to run safely? What am I looking at here for $$? Also the car has 90,000 on it. Is it still a good idea?

boosting is the est bang for the buck..you'll come out cheaper than swapping even if you upr\grade internas.

i would agree with boosting your d16y8. start reading up on turbos and asking questions that you dont know about turbos. i swapped a b16a2 in my 98 and now im turboing it so im up to about 5k right now with the swap and boost. with the turbo for the d series you can get it for about 1500 bucks and then if you do blow your internals, its only going to be 2000 to build them back up and then you will have an even sweeter motor. 90k miles is fine to boost with as well.

GSR block with a SiR head then boost down the road.

So if I turbo the y8, how much horsepower am I looking at on stock internals without running a huge risk of blowing them? How much am I really going to feel it during daily driving and such?
