Default intermittent oil loss?

My son has a 98 EX that will use a quart of oil in 240 miles - then won't loose any for another 3000 miles. No sign of oil on the ground, or out the exhaust pipe.

Is it possible to have an intermittent problem with the emission system that would cause this? Ideas?

Thanks,

Make sure you're taking the oil level readings exactly at the same time after turning off the car. If you wait too long, the oil drainback valve will drain the head into the sump, basically making you think you're burning less. On mine, its about 3/4 quart difference if I wait too long...and I use OEM filters.

If you're confident in the readings, then check out your PCV valve and make sure it's not sticking.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that - it's checked randomly.

I thought of the PVC valve and changed it a couple months ago. I didn't realize I was a contortionist until I tried replacing it - WOW.
