Prepping a B16A2

My friend asked me today, what he could do to improve a completly stock B16A2 to make it more turob friendly. He has limited funds, around $750, so what should I tell him?

I would maybe look into upping the displacement to 1.7 or 1.8 too.

If he really wants to turbo the B16A2, he should put a thicker head gasket on it to lower the compression ratio.

how much can u bore a b16? .30 im guessin?

To lower the CR, I would recommend using GSR pistons (USDM P72-A0 = ~9:1; JDM P72-00 = ~9.5:1) or USDM ITR pistons (P73-A0 = ~9.75:1).

I guess what he's really worried about is having to beef up the engine, stuff like camshafts and cam gears. If he doesnt have to, he doesnt want to spend the money right away.

if he means stuff like that, i would just do a type r exhaust cam, exhaust, and a high flow cat. hopefully under 750. shop around, a used exhaust would be a good find.

i dont want to say ne thing against sacicons cuz hes the man, but my friend had type r cams in his civ before he put his turbo in, but when he actually did, he took em out and put the stock ones back in.. or otherones i forget. but why would u pick the type r cam sacs?

Another question, i dont know a whole lot about honda motors but am learning alot now that i have one, but how must boost can a b16 handle of stock internals, and arent hondas notorius for thin cylinder walls?

You can get by running about 7 or 8 psi on stock.

actually 8 might be pushing it if its driven daily like that. it will wear down exponentially faster. you prolly wanna stick with 6, maybe 7, on a daily driver. get a boost controller for those times when you need the extra PSI or 2

the stock ones are actually better for power than having type r ones. the key is, i would only use the exhaust cam from the R. the extra flow on the exhaust side helps spin up the turbo faster. if you use both cams, the overlap, which is good for NA motors, will hurt the power on the turboed car. it will actually push your fresh charge straight from the intake valve out the exhaust valve, instead of into the cylinder to be burnt. and if you use a type r cam on the exhaust side, adjustable cam gears are a great idea, then you can dial out more of the overlap.
