A Pretty Basic Question(s)....I Think???
I know this may seem like a stupid question(s), but I'd still like to know.
Well.....I want to upgrade to a better engine than the single cam that comes in my '97 Honda Civic DX Coupe. Many of my friends a couple of people that i have talked to have said that I should go with a B16A. First, would this give me a pretty decent gain over the one that I currently have? Second, does swapping and engine require a much more significant amount of maintenance? Third, will the B16A (or any other swap engine) have a lot of problems? And fourth, about how much am I looking at for a COMPLETE swap, without, and with installation?
If I can get some useful responses that would be awesome. Thanks.

Swapping in a B16A would give you about 50 more horses than what youve got already. And the new engine shouldnt require anymore maintanaince than your old engine. Shouldnt be any significant problems with the B16A. And for a complete swap, for a first gen SiR I-$1250 and thats OBD0, for a second gen SiR II- $2100, and thats OBD1.
Do you know anyone that has Honda experience that could help you do the swap yourself?
If it were me though, and you had $3000, Id got with a B18C1 (GSR) instead of the B16A.
What year car do you have?

I do have a buddy that said he'd do it for me. And my civic is a '97. I would gladly go for a gsr IF i had the money. i'm 17 and just got my first job a couple months ago....so i've only got about 1,100....not enough for a gsr....but enough for a B16a in a couple of months. what's the differencebetween the first and second gen SiR's?
thanks for the info!

Whadda ya know, Im 17 too, and am quite poor.
As far as the generation differences, the SiR I was OBD0 (On Board Diagnostics), and the SiR II was OBD1. This has to do with what your ECU reads, and error codes and such. Your car is OBD2, and can be wired with the use of a harness to work with OBD1 cars with relative ease. However, OBD0 cars are difficult to wire for use on OBD2 cars. So, going with the SiR II is going to be your best bet.

Hey Sparky, I agree with what BallardCivic said above.
The B16A2 should pretty well drop right in your car and it'll require the same maintenance as your present engine or a B18C1. The B18C1 might require a few modifications in the engine bay, but the power will be well worth waiting until you save up the cash.
Just like your girlfriend says, "go big or stay home!".

Youve already got a good chunk of change saved up, and IMO the GSR engine is a lot better than the B16A. The GSR is not a whole whole whole lot more than the B16A, so if I were you, Id stick it out and go with the best.
Plus you can get an OBD2 GSR, so that will make the swap slightly easier.

the b18c1 is actually almost twice as much as the SIR-II. the GSR only has about 20 horses than the SIR-II but way more torque.
if ur willing to save another 1.5k you could get the GSR...but the SIR-II is only 5 or 6 hundred away. your choice
oh yeah..the big 'n' bad SIR-III has 5 horses on the SIR-II. costs 2.3k.
here are prices without shipping
SiR-II: 1.8k
SiR-III: 2.3k
GSR: 2.7k
i think you should get the GSR. thats what im going for.
