Shifting

I was watching my buddy race his 99 honda ex, (sitting in passgener seat), he was shifting in the red rpm range. he thinks thats the best way to race a 5spd is to let the rpm reach the red zone. how can I convince him that it ruins the engine or tranny.I believe the best way is to (in a race of course) shift is right before the red zone. Who is right here.

I don't even watch the tach. Get to know your car. When it stops pulling- shift.

But if you need something to tell your buddy... tell him that his car makes peak Hp @ 6600 rpm so what's the point of him going beyond that?

wow your the new sacions (your like superman), hows the supercharger going, how much did cost. did you have to make any upgrades in order to install it, does it have any bad sideeffects on the engine. i am going to shutup now

I am faaaaaaaaarrrrrr from Sacicons. You and I just happen to be on at the same time every day, which isn't too tough because I am on at least 8 hours a day. But I have learned enough on here to answer a Q. every now and then.

The supercharger is going Ok. I got about half of it done today before work. The beauty of the Jackson set-up is that you don't have to upgrade your internals with the stock kit. You dont' even need I/H/E because they have tested like every component in the universe and found no (or nominal) gains with them. Not even a cam. How's that for "bolt-on" power? The other thing is that there is a bypass valve on it so when you aren't hard on the gas... no boost and no extra wear on the motor, but I imagine as with any serious upgrade it has to shorten the life some, but how many turbos do you see with a 100,000 mile warranty?

how much hp does it promise, how much did it cost you. ANd you said that it can turn off when not needed, how.

Check out their FAQ's. I read them like 30 times while I was waiting on mine.

you could get a shift light. polo posted a nice sequential LED one a while back...it had like four yellow lights, a red, and a green one. supposedly you could see it approaching the shift point so you dont even have to react, or have mad reaction skills. and the green LED is supposed to be bright enough that you dont have to look directly at it when your racing.

shift lights are nice. even the little ones you can see without looking at it. so im sure the huge ones there wouldnt be any problem seeing it out of the corner of your eye.

RE: Shifting

is he taking it past redline? because its only at 7k so if he wants to wait that long, he'll loose a couple hundreths. but i guess he can do what he wants. tell your buddy to get a swap.

the first one is made by rev-lite, the second by G2

RE: Shifting

Yeah, red x shift lights are my favorite. What the hell? Why does that happen?

carlover 07-29-2005 05:59 PM

RE: Shifting

why would anyone need a shift light other than nonexperienced drivers

Street Sniper 07-29-2005 06:08 PM

RE: Shifting

So you dont' have to watch the tach insteaad of the road?? Even inexperienced drivers won't benefit from a shift light if they set it too high. It doesn't tell you the optimal place to shift- you set it where you want it to light and it alerts you to that rpm. Good ones have different rpm setting for each gear.

carlover 07-29-2005 06:17 PM

RE: Shifting

i know but a good driver feals the next gear, and doesn't need a shift light.

dont hurt to be safe though :D

RE: Shifting

Some of you are saying that experienced drivers dont need a light and they can just feel when to shift. This isnt always true. The power you start making the harder it is to tell. In my car when I go WOT the damn thing throws you in your seat (at about 3k) and doesnt even think about letting up until I bounce the rev limiter at 7700 when my redline is at 7k. If it wasnt for all those pesky valves I have slowing things down I think I could make solid HP all the way to like 9. ANyway, there is no way I could feel or even hear when to shift, this thing is friggen LOUD!!!

Any 05 Evo, even the MR, comes with 100,000 mile warrenty. But good luck redeeming it, especially if you want to mod or race it.

RE: Shifting

Oh yeah, I forget to mention I dont have a shift light and dont plan on getting one cause my Tach came mounted in the center of my inst cluster. Its the biggest and most obvious easy thing to see.

But my turboXS UTEC engine mngmnt system does have one built in that it can light up some of the stock dash lights or something like that but Ive never tried to use it.

Nail I3unny 07-30-2005 12:14 AM

RE: Shifting

another option for a tach would be to get a BIG one at the bottom of your column that you can kinda read outta the corner of your eye, or get one that has a shift light built in

RE: Shifting

redlining is sometimes helpful i've seen people shift at the redline point for more pick up but i also seen peolpe shift way before the redline. it all depends what you have in your car and how your tranny is setup and your is set up. but yeh that shift device isnt to bad i would get it for help

mill$civic 07-31-2005 07:21 PM

RE: Shifting

my civic dident come with a autometer tack with a shift light, i used to shift at every time it lit up but it just got annoying after a bit because if u want to go further it just stays lit (at night its bright even with the light cover), so now i just set it to where i dont want to go over, because sometimes you just love the sound and feel of acceleration you get carried away ,you guys no what im talking about..
