SOHC cam

Default SOHC cam

Can anyone please tell me the advantages and disadvantage of installing a more agressive cam in a D16Y9 motor. SOHC non-Vtec head. I heard some stuff about losing low end power but better top end. I have to take into consideration its my everyday car and cant afford to change the engine. I know it wont be as fast as a DOHC Vtec, but how much will it differ?

To really see gains from a more agressive cam you would need some fuel management as well, prolly even an EMS if you go stage 2 or above. Otherwise I'd say spend your money on something else.

by installing a fuel/engine management unit, what would my gains be like? Before installing a cam.

^^^ I agree. But there are different types of cams that put put power in different rpm ranges. Stage 1, is for basically stock and mostly low-end power, stage 2 mid range, stage 3 high-end.

thats true for any power mod, your fuel map needs tuning whenever you install gainful power mods, especialy ones that will effect your redline, so saying its needed for one power mod like a cam is incorrect... to see the full potential of any mod you need tuning

also with a cam, the idle quality can be negatively affected, which isn't good for a daily driver.

Installing a cam will become expensive......youd definetly wanna get a tune afterwards....making sure the fuel maps are made accordingly..........and tuning isnt cheap........neither is fuel management........have u looked into forced induction for your car? I can get ya a turbo kit for about a thousand bucks......

Hey Pete, a grand for you guys is like 7 grand here in SA. Sure i can pick up a lil turbo with intercooler for that price but then the engine management costs another 2000 and then ive still gotta get someone to install dem tings. Im gonna end up with a 11 grand hole in my pocket.
